The psychology of asking for help
We treat asking for help as weakness. Research — and our own community — says the opposite.

In five years of running this community, the saddest messages we receive all share one line: "I didn't want to bother anyone."
Why asking feels so hard
Psychologists call it the beautiful mess effect: we judge our own vulnerability far more harshly than others judge it. When someone else asks for help we think they're brave. When we ask, we think we're a burden.
What actually happens when you ask
People like you more, not less. Helping creates connection — the helper becomes invested in your success. Every mentorship in our community started with one uncomfortable question.
How to ask well
- Be specific. "Can you review my resume?" beats "Can you help me?"
- Make it easy to say yes — small, clear, time-boxed requests.
- Report back. Telling someone their help worked is the fuel that keeps givers giving.
No one has to struggle alone. But the door only opens from the inside.
